Min Yoongi (Korean: ë￣¼ì¤ê¸°; born March 9, 1993), professionally known by his stage name Suga (ìê°; Korean pronunciation: [ÉÊ°uÉ¡aÌ]; written in all capital letters), Agust D, [A], is a South Korean rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He debuted in 2013 as a member of the South Korean boy band BTS under Big Hit Entertainment. His first solo mixtape, Agust D, was released in 2016 and re-released on digital download and streaming platforms in 2018, peaking at number 3 on the Billboard World Albums Chart. In 2020, he released his second solo mixtape, D-2. It reached number 11 on the US Billboard 200, number 7 on the UK Albums Chart, and number 2 on the Australian ARIA Albums Chart.

Suga released his debut solo album D-Day in 2023. The song debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200, tying him with BTS bandmate Jimin as the most successful solo artist in Korean history. A full member of the Korea Music Copyright Society, Suga is the songwriter and producer of over 160 songs, including Suran’s “Wine,” which peaked at number two on the Gaon Music Chart and won Best R&B at the 2017 Melon Music Awards.

Early life and education

Min Yoongi was born on March 9, 1993 in Daegu, South Korea. As the youngest of two sons, he attended Daejeon Elementary School, Gwangneum Middle School, and Apgujeong High School. He belongs to the Yeohun Min clan.

After graduating from Global Cyber ​​University in March 2019 with a degree in Broadcasting and Entertainment, he enrolled in Hanyang Cyber ​​University’s Master of Business Administration program in Advertising and Media.

Career

1993–2010: Beginnings

Suga said he became interested in rap after hearing Stoney Skunk’s “Raga Muffin,” which he had never heard before. After listening to Epik High, he decided to become a rapper.

At the age of 13, he started writing lyrics and learned about MIDI. At 17, he worked part-time at a record studio. Since then, he began composing and arranging music, rapping, and performing. Before signing with the label, he was an underground rapper under the name Gloss. As a member of the hip-hop crew D-Town, he produced the song “518-062,” which commemorated the 2010 Gwangju Uprising.

Name

His stage name, Suga (ìê°), is derived from the first syllable of the term shooting guard (ìí ê°ë), the position he played in basketball during his school days. For his 2016 mixtape, he adopted the pen name “Agust D”, which is derived from the initials of his hometown, Daegu, DT, and “Suga” spelled backwards.

Artistry

Suga writes, composes, arranges, mixes, and masters his own songs. The Korea Music Copyright Association has recognized him with over 160 registered songs. He plays piano and produces mostly hip-hop and R&B music. His lyrics contain themes that are “full of dreams and hope,” and he creates his music with the hope that it will “empower many people.”

He cites Stony Skunk and Epik High as inspirations for making hip-hop music. In particular, the former’s reggae-hip-hop hybrid album Ragga Muffin (2005) and its title track sparked his interest in the genre. Jeff Benjamin of Fuse said Suga’s mixtape “demonstrates the star’s flair for hot production and hardcore rap style, and how he can turn weaknesses into strengths,” while other critics said Suga’s “storytelling is evident in the music he produces, breaking down musical barriers of censorship and whitewashing.”

In January 2018, Suga was promoted to a full member of the Korea Music Copyright Society.

Reception

In 2017, Suga was voted 13th most popular idol of the year in a poll conducted by Gallup Korea. In 2018, he finished in 7th place, and in 2019, he finished in 9th place.

Personal life

In 2018, Suga purchased a ₩3.4 billion (US$3.09 million) apartment and as of 2019, lives in Hannam-dong, Seoul, South Korea.

Health

Suga was diagnosed with appendicitis and underwent surgery at Shinchon Severance Hospital on December 9, 2013. He was discharged on December 17, but was readmitted on December 26 due to inflammation at the surgical site. As a result, he was unable to participate in the year-end music festivals.

In December 2016, Suga tripped on a step at his front door and injured his ear. On doctor’s advice, he took a week off from performing and choreography (including the year-end festivals) to ensure the wound healed properly. Suga underwent surgery for a torn labrum in his left shoulder (reverse Bankart tear) in November 2020 and announced that he would be taking a break from promotional activities to recover. He resumed his activities in January 2021, starting with a performance with BTS at the 35th Golden Disc Awards.
