Selena Gomez joins billionaire celebrity rich list

Selena Gomez rose to fame as a child star on Barney and the Disney Channel. Her latest role? A billionaire.

The 32-year-old actress and singer has amassed a fortune of $1.3 billion, according to Bloomberg, which added the celebrity to its Billionaires Index on Friday. The publication estimates that her wealth comes primarily from Rare Beauty, a cosmetics company she founded five years ago and in which she has a stake worth more than $1 billion. The success of her brand makes her one of the “youngest self-made women” on the list, alongside Taylor Swift and Rihanna.

Rare Beauty, known for its liquid blush and lip tints that have become a social media sensation, reportedly had net sales of $400 million in the 12 months ending in February.

Bloomberg reports that Gomez also earns tens of millions of dollars from endorsement deals with companies like Louis Vuitton, Coach and Puma. She also reportedly earns “at least” $6 million per season for her Emmy-nominated role in the Hulu hit “Only Murders in the Building,” which was recently renewed for a fifth season.

Bloomberg reports that despite her success in film and music, which includes multiple Emmy and Grammy nominations, those accomplishments make up a relatively small portion of her wealth.

Texas-born Gomez has been in the public eye for nearly three decades, and her success has led to scrutiny of her fashion, her friends and her health struggles, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and the autoimmune disease lupus. She writes about her family’s journey from Mexico to the United States, which began with her aunt “hiding in the back of a truck” and recording the song in Spanish. The singer became the most followed woman in the world on Instagram last year. She counts more than 424 million fans on the platform, more than Swift and Kylie Jenner, a questionable achievement for a star who has discussed the platform’s negative impact on her mental health and has sometimes removed it.

The account was silent on Friday, despite news of her latest awards making headlines.

In an interview with BBC1 almost a decade ago, Gomez reflected on the length of her career, despite her youth. “The funny thing is, it’s been almost 20 years already… I guess I’m just too old?” she joked, adding that she’d like to achieve more. “You know what’s funny? A lot of times it feels like I haven’t even started yet,” she said.
