Robert Downey Jr to return to Marvel as Doctor Doom

Robert Downey Jr. will return to the world of Marvel superheroes for the first time in five years, but not as Iron Man, the role that started the blockbuster series. The actor will be returning as Dr. Victor Von Doom, the famous comic book villain that spawned the popular film series. Downey Jr. is set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, due for release in May 2026, and Secret Wars, due for release a year later. The stars who will join the Marvel series were announced at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Downey Jr. appeared on stage, masked in Doctor Doom’s iconic mask and green cape, and revealed himself to fans. He told reporters that he “loves playing complex characters.” The 59-year-old helped launch the Marvel Cinematic Universe and starred in its first film, Iron Man, in 2008. His last Marvel film was 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

The American actor won an Oscar for his role in Oppenheimer earlier this year.Marvel plans to release three more films in 2025 before The Avengers return to screens. In Captain America: Brave New World, Harrison Ford will take over for the late William Hurt as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Florence Pugh will star in Thunderbolts, while Pedro Pascal will make his Marvel debut in Fantastic 4: The First Steps.

Disney’s Marvel film franchise was the first to make $30 billion (£23.3 billion) at the box office, but profits have declined in recent years. But the recent release of Deadpool & Wolverine, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has brought in a possible revival, taking in $96 million on its opening day on Friday. Last year, Marvel fired actor Jonathan Majors, who played the villain Kang the Conqueror, after he was convicted of assaulting his girlfriend.
