Q: Please share with the people what you experienced during the battles of Lay Kay Kaw.
Answer: ——
“It’s nearly time for Christmas,” he said. In the new town Lay Kay Kaw, built near the town of Myawaddy in Karen State, as a symbol of peace, the activists from all over the Myanmar country have been fleeting there as the coup d’état. It’s also a place where CDM staffs and warrants of 505 Article (A) have been fleeing to LKK for some time. The area is also under the control of the KNU’s 6th Brigade. Tensions between the two sides have risen since the military launched a series of arrests at the hands of their informants, although the military has been conducting searches in Lay Kay Kaw for different reasons. They have often came to LKK for untitle checks at the morning and It was just for show normally. So, I thought this time might also be as usual and then I left with only one piece of clothing and one backpack. Unfortunately, we had to move to “Mae War Khee” village conditionally because the SAC had been searching us for the whole day.

In Mae War Khee, the evacuees were provided with food and shelter by respective associations. For our sleep, we had to spread out only on a mat in the field and nobody had a chance for bath. On December 15, the artilleries were shelled to Lay Kay Kaw town and the military junta began shelling nearby camps. They also started firing with heavy artillery shells from their positions. When the battles were broken out in Lay Kay Kaw and Mae Htaw Thale, the local people had to flee to Mae War Khee to escape from the war.

Fighting broke out in Mae Htaw Thale between Myawaddy and Lay Kay Kaw, the military council was severely wounded. On that day, the KNLA arrested six members of the military council and two members of the BGF, and posted on Facebook that the captives were being held accountable and well treated according to international military rules. On December 16, we collected food at the Mae War Khee camp and prepared food for the refugees. Refugees were provided with food and shelter at Mae War Khi School, a Christian church and a monastery where they were located nearby Mae War Khee School Camp. Our team cooked meals for hundreds of people and distributed food parcels. We knew that the fighting would be intensify and so we planned to evacuate refugees especially women and children first to the “Fluee” refugee camp. Our group stayed left at Mae War Khee School camp to feed our comrades on the front line where I was working.

From the beginning, heavy artillery continued to be fired from wherever the KNU / KNLA / PDFs were supposed to be. We heard gunfire at least a mile from where we were, so we could not predict how strong the bomb would be. After hearing it, it became normal. The bomber struck shortly after 10pm on December 24, when a bomb exploded in the area. We have to run to the place. I spent the whole night under the school in the morning.

At that time, it was the most difficult thing for us to move out of the barracks. I continued to do my duty when I saw nearby camps bombing planes. At that time, telephone and internet lines were cut off and only Thai cards could be used, as Myanmar SIM cards were no longer working.

December 25, Christmas Day
While reading on the internet, I read about a SAC’s battle. I read that they (Military Junta) used to attack on ethnic holidays with more efforts. I kept thinking about it. At around 10 a.m. on Christmas Day, heavy artillery fire began. Significantly, instead of firing one or two shots as before, three or four shots were fired at a time. The bomber struck shortly after noon in front of a school about 500 yards from the school. It was very close to our place and the first shots were fired, I started to think about our refugee’s safety First.

We knew that they had heavy artillery on each of the four cannons, so we prepared to retreat.
